Orthodontic treatment is a special branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws (malocclusion) to improve both form, function and appearance. The main goal of orthodontics is to achieve proper alignment of teeth, correct jaw irregularities, and create a balanced occlusion. This helps improve chewing, speech, and oral hygiene while also enhancing facial aesthetics and confidence. Orthodontic care also reduces the risks of tooth decay, gum disease, and abnormal tooth wear caused by improper alignment. Orthodontic care generally follows several phases: pre-treatment phase with diagnosis, X-rays, impressions, and treatment planning; active treatment phase with application and periodic adjustment of braces or aligners to move teeth into planned position; and finishing and retention phase with fine-tuning the bite and fitting retainers to stabilize results and prevent relapse. Recent innovations include device-assisted therapy using controlled mechanical stimulation to accelerate tooth movement and shorten treatment time, along with modern digital tools like computer-modeled aligners for highly personalized and comfortable treatment options.
